Telegram's $500 million Russian bond frozen due to Western sanctions

January 6 – Per the Financial Times, roughly $500 million in Russian bonds held by Telegram has been frozen amid Western sanctions. Telegram has issued bonds multiple times in recent years (most recently a $1.7 billion tranche in May 2025) and has repurchased most of its 2026-maturing bonds. However, the $500 million bond in question has been frozen due to sanctions. The company stated it will make payment at maturity, with the paying agent and custodian determining whether funds can reach Russian bondholders.
