Dragonfly Partner: Only 1% of Funds in Zcash Privacy Pool Have Been Decloaked, Suggesting Holders Don’t Believe the Vulnerability Has Been Exploited

2026.06.06 12:10:51

June 6, Dragonfly Capital partner Haseeb Qureshi broke down a recently patched Zcash vulnerability, noting that if bad actors had exploited the flaw before the fix, the outcome would’ve looked a lot like a privacy pool drain. If someone minted fake privacy ZEC, they would’ve had to offload it quickly before others caught onto the same gap—but here’s the catch: most of ZEC’s major trading platforms only handle transparent ZEC. Attackers can’t sell newly minted privacy ZEC directly on Binance or Coinbase; they have to first de-shield it. In this scenario, the real hit lands on regular passive privacy holders. Transparent ZEC is fully public, so it’s easy to enforce that total supply doesn’t exceed the cap—if someone tried to de-shield and move more than the limit, it’d get blocked at the exit. For transparent ZEC holders, including exchange users and those driving ZEC price discovery, the vulnerability has zero meaningful impact; any losses would be entirely borne by privacy ZEC holders. The team’s next move? In an upcoming upgrade, they’ll roll out new turnstiles and fresh privacy pools to confirm the privacy pool wasn’t inflated. Qureshi compared this to “counting heads at the end of a field trip” to make sure no extra stowaways snuck onto the bus. Haseeb also noted that while AI uncovered the vulnerability, it’ll also drive a whole new category of fixes: formal verification. He’s bullish on formal verification becoming the standard for securing all industry software, arguing it structurally stops implementation-level flaws. The market’s panicking right now, but actual privacy holders who’d face real losses if the flaw was exploited aren’t. Only 1% of the 30% privacy pool has been de-shielded so far, which he says is a clear sign that people at risk don’t think the vulnerability was ever used. He added that the privacy pool’s size acts as a kind of prediction market for this vulnerability.
