Trump Calls Iran Situation 'Progressing Smoothly' as U.S. Military Keeps Intercepting Missiles, Targeting Radar Sites

2026.06.06 22:54:41

June 6 local time, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement that Iran launched seven ballistic missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain on Friday local time. U.S. forces successfully intercepted six of the missiles, while one missed its intended target. Earlier the same day, U.S. military assets also shot down four Iranian drones heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, and subsequently conducted strikes on multiple Iranian coastal surveillance radar facilities to halt further attacks. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated its missile and drone strikes targeted the U.S.-occupied Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the U.S. Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain. Kuwait’s military assisted in intercepting the incoming missiles and drones, while Bahrain briefly activated its air defense sirens in response. Despite ongoing hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump commented that the “Iran situation seems to be progressing quite nicely,” adding that the U.S. will “resolve the Iran issue very soon” either through diplomatic means or a harsher approach. Trump also disclosed that Iran currently holds approximately 21% to 22% of its total missile inventory. Prior to these events, U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a preliminary agreement to extend the ongoing ceasefire by 60 days and launch a new round of nuclear talks. However, Iran has not publicly accepted the deal, as Trump has demanded modifications to the arrangement, leaving the fragile ceasefire in a precarious state. Separately, the U.S. continues escalating pressure on Iran through multiple measures: maintaining blockades on Iranian ports, seizing a sanctioned Iranian oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, and imposing a fresh round of sanctions on individuals, companies, and tankers operating in Iran’s energy sector. Additionally, while the Lebanese government and Israel recently signed a U.S.-mediated ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah has refused to accept the arrangement. Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in multiple areas of southern Lebanon on Friday, ordering the evacuation of residents from nine villages, which resulted in at least nine fatalities. Analysts warn that the escalation in Lebanon could further disrupt Iran’s ceasefire negotiations and the broader security situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Analyst: European Central Bank expected to hold interest rates steady this week and maintain a hawkish bias.

Nuveen global investment strategist Laura Cooper said in a report that following June’s interest rate hike, the European Central Bank (ECB) will likely hold interest rates steady at this week’s meeting while maintaining a hawkish stance. Cooper noted that if renewed tensions drive energy prices higher, the ECB will remain open to further policy tightening. She added that inflation is milder than feared, the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) pricing subindex shows almost no signs of reaccelerating, and producer price data confirms upstream cost pressures are easing. “These factors provide a reason for holding steady this month,” she said. The complication is that commodity supplies are being disrupted again, which could reignite energy price pressures just as the ECB gains confidence in its inflation decline path.
