The AI Boom is Fueling Tech Inflation, Rewriting a Two-Decade History of Tech Products Only Getting Cheaper

2026.06.14 16:45:08

June 14: AI is Driving a US Inflation Surge In May, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for computer software and accessories jumped 14.5% year-over-year—the largest annual increase since official records began in 2000. Producer prices for electronic components, meanwhile, skyrocketed 27% last month, hitting an all-time high for that metric. This marks a sharp reversal from prior years: before 2026, prices for both software and electronic components had declined almost annually. Memory costs have seen some of the steepest gains, rising more than 100% over the past year alone. DDR5 and DDR4 memory prices in particular surged 290% year-over-year. The core driver of this price spike is the AI boom: global data centers powering artificial intelligence projects have absorbed the vast majority of the world’s available chip supply, crimping stock and driving up costs. This jump in memory prices could keep U.S. inflation elevated through all of 2027, adding to existing economic strains from the ongoing Iran conflict. The AI revolution is clearly fueling a new wave of tech-driven inflation across the U.S.

JPMorgan projects the impact of the FOMC resolution on US stocks: there is a 50% probability the Federal Reserve will remain hawkish, and the S&P 500 is likely to weaken.

JPMorgan has conducted a scenario analysis on how tonight’s FOMC decision will impact US equities. The bank expects the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged. Under the baseline scenario (50% probability) of a hawkish hold, the S&P 500 will likely be flat or fall 0.5%. The dovish hold scenario (28% probability) is viewed as the most bullish outcome, lifting the index by 1%. A 25-basis-point rate hike scenario (20% probability) could cause the S&P 500 to drop 1.5%-2%, with the Nasdaq likely to underperform.

Tether open-sources edge-side vision-language model VisionPsy-Nano

According to Tether’s official blog, QVAC, an AI research project under Tether Data, has open-sourced VisionPsy-Nano—a compact vision-language model built for end-device and edge deployment. With around 460 million parameters, the model brings multimodal understanding capabilities that previously required cloud infrastructure directly to mobile devices. Among all evaluated end-side vision-language models with fewer than 500 million parameters, VisionPsy-Nano scored the highest overall normalized score of 62.3, outperforming competing models from Liquid AI, Hugging Face, and others in 16 out of 17 benchmark tests. Tether is launching two versions of the model: the Flash version, optimized for low latency, which retains roughly 99% of the full model’s quality while drastically improving inference speed. Both versions are open-sourced under the Apache 2.0 license. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, noted that this proves local-first, efficient AI is a viable approach, enabling powerful and private AI to run on devices people already have.
