Bank of America Strategist: Market Ignoring Risks, Warn of Backlash from AI Investments

Oracle Corp's 5-year credit default swap (CDS) rose to a record high of around 203 basis points, meaning the annual cost of purchasing default protection on every $10 million of the company's debt is roughly $203,000. Oracle's CDS has more than quadrupled since mid-2025, even surpassing its peak during the 2008 financial crisis. On the other hand, the company's borrowing costs are also climbing: the spread on its 6.7% bond maturing in 2056 widened by 8 basis points to 263 basis points on Monday, while the spread on its 5.7% bond maturing in 2036 rose by 9 basis points to 205 basis points. Meanwhile, S&P Global Ratings downgraded Oracle to BBB- on July 9, one notch above junk status, citing its rapidly growing AI-related spending. Oracle's credit risk has reached crisis-level territory.

According to HTX market data, Bitcoin plunged sharply ahead of the US stock market open, falling more than 0.6% in nearly 10 minutes after 9 PM, and is currently trading at $64,395.54. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has posted his first tweet, sharing an open letter co-authored by NVIDIA titled "Open Weights and U.S. AI Leadership". The letter is co-signed by over 20 tech firms and organizations including Meta, Microsoft, Andreessen Horowitz, Hugging Face, IBM, Mistral AI, Palantir, Perplexity, Mozilla, NVIDIA, and Y Combinator. The open letter asserts that open-weight models—AI models that anyone can download, inspect, modify, and run on their own infrastructure—can expand access to the AI economy, boost market competition, and grant users greater control. It also acknowledges that open weights carry real risks, but emphasizes that the appropriate response is not a ban, but rather advancing AI and cybersecurity defenses through openness. The letter urges policymakers to expand access to computing power, invest in shared training resources, and avoid imposing premature restrictions on open models. Huang stated, "The world needs cutting-edge closed-source models, and it also needs cutting-edge open models."

According to a report by The Nation Thailand, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed criminal charges against Bitkub Online and two of its former directors—Sakolkorn Sakavee and Thaweesap Rawan—with the country’s Department of Special Investigation (economic crime suppression agency) on July 23. The charges allege that after Bitkub was hacked in 2021, the platform submitted false daily net capital reports to regulators between May 10 and October 30 of that year, failing to truthfully disclose the theft of digital assets worth roughly 1.7 billion baht. The two former directors were also accused of making false entries in corporate documents, misleading regulators into believing customer assets were properly safeguarded and Bitkub had not sustained losses. In a statement, Bitkub responded that the incident occurred around five years ago, and relevant personnel opted not to disclose the theft at the time to prevent a bank run. The exchange’s co-founders personally purchased an equal quantity and type of digital assets to cover the shortfall, ensuring customer assets suffered no losses. Thailand’s SEC also confirmed on September 8, 2025 that customer assets are safe and intact.
