Leveraging SK Hynix's record-breaking initial public offering (IPO), South Korea is accelerating its drive to push exporters to repatriate dollars.

SK Hynix’s record U.S. listing has driven a sharp rebound in the South Korean won, giving Seoul’s authorities fresh impetus to urge exporters to repatriate overseas U.S. dollar holdings. The chipmaker raised $26.5 billion in the listing, and its U.S. dollar selling operations in the market have laid the foundation for the won’s subsequent strength. At a meeting last week, South Korea’s Vice Finance Minister Heo Seok urged exporters to convert a larger share of their overseas earnings into won and repatriate funds held abroad. SK Hynix’s U.S. dollar selling shows that a single corporate move is enough to influence market trends. This has likely reinforced Seoul’s resolve: rather than relying solely on foreign exchange reserves, it will accelerate a months-long plan to boost the local currency by leveraging major exporters. The core logic of this strategy is that corporate-level capital flows can serve as an alternative when direct intervention becomes too costly. Stephen Lee, an economist at Seoul’s Meritz Securities, said the move sparked by SK Hynix has snowballed into a broader corporate U.S. dollar selling wave. In addition to U.S. dollar conversions tied to the company’s ADR proceeds, the won’s sustained strength has also encouraged other firms that had delayed converting foreign currency earnings to start selling U.S. dollars.
