$5 Trillion Rate-Hike Bet Unravels As Fed Holds Steady, Largest-Ever Interest Rate Trade Reverses

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at 3.5%-3.75% at its July meeting, triggering the rapid unwinding of large hedge positions markets had built around expectations of a rate hike. Data shows open interest in August federal funds futures once hit a historic milestone, breaking 1 million contracts for the first time ever, involving a notional principal of roughly $5 trillion. Following the announcement of the resolution, CME data revealed open interest in the contract dropped by around 140,000 contracts. The net short positions that leveraged funds had been steadily adding reversed course, leading to a sharp rally in August federal funds futures prices, leaving bears betting on rate hikes in the red. Earlier, markets had pushed the probability of a July rate hike to nearly 50%, but as new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave no signal of an impending rate hike, related trades quickly cooled.

Coldcard warns of potential seed phrase risk in its Mk3 hardware wallet, while security experts are investigating an anomalous BTC transfer worth $38.3 million.

Canadian hardware wallet manufacturer Coinkite has issued a security warning, advising users who generated mnemonics using Coldcard Mk3 with firmware versions 4.0.1 to 5.0.3 to migrate their assets as soon as possible. The company stated that initial analysis shows wallets using BIP-39 passphrases carry lower risk, while Mk4, Q, and Mk5 devices are unaffected. The investigation is still ongoing. Meanwhile, security researchers are probing an unusual transfer involving 594.48 BTC (approximately $38.3 million). AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton noted that the attacker transferred 1,324 UTXOs across 500 transactions over 3 blocks, speculating the issue may stem from insufficient random number entropy during wallet generation. Wizardsardine CEO Kevin Loaec argued the vulnerability could be related to low-entropy random number generators in a software library, secure chip, specific device batch, or firmware version, with attackers potentially using AI-generated scripts to brute-force affected wallets. No conclusive evidence has yet confirmed a direct link between this fund transfer and the Coldcard Mk3 vulnerability.

Michael Saylor: The goal is to push STRC back to its peg around September 8.

Strategy founder Michael Saylor stated during today's earnings call: "When STRC went public, it took us approximately 70 trading days to return to par value. Some may have forgotten our IPO was priced at $90, and it took 70 days to rebound to par. If we count from when STRC fell below the $99–$100 trading range, 40 trading days have elapsed as of today. Taking May 28, the day it broke below the range, as the starting point, counting forward 70 trading days lands around September 8. We are closely monitoring this date and tracking our progress. We will focus on restoring STRC to health. We believe that since we achieved this within 70 days post-IPO, setting a 70-day recovery target after breaking below the range is reasonable. We have sufficient means to bring STRC back to par value."
