South Korean retail investors are accelerating their exit from the stock market, with their trading share falling to a six-month low.

South Korea Exchange said today that as sharp market volatility erodes investor sentiment, South Korean individual investors are rapidly exiting the stock market. Data shows individual investors accounted for roughly 31.2% to 31.5% of total trading volume on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) in July, a sharp drop from 48.1% in January. The proportion has fallen by 16 to 17 percentage points in just six months. South Korea Exchange noted that even minor rebounds in the index now trigger sell-offs, as investors rush to recoup their principal and exit, accelerating capital outflows from the domestic market. Since June, individual investors have no longer been the dominant force in market trading. In July, foreign investors accounted for roughly 38% to 39% of KOSPI trading volume, significantly outpacing retail investors. Analysts point out that the KOSPI’s heavy reliance on two leading firms—Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—is a key reason behind individual investors’ retreat from the South Korean market.

New York judge rejects CFTC’s motion to block enforcement action against Kalshi, as the federal-state jurisdiction dispute continues.

New York District Judge Jed S. Rakoff today dismissed an emergency temporary restraining order (TRO) application from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which sought to block New York State from advancing its enforcement case against prediction platform Kalshi. The judge ruled that the CFTC failed to demonstrate a likelihood of success on the merits of its case, nor did it prove a risk of irreparable harm. The dismissal was issued without prejudice, meaning the CFTC can refile the relevant motion by August 7. New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Kalshi last Friday, alleging the platform operated an unlicensed prediction business by offering contracts on events including sports and elections. New York State had already sent a cease-and-desist order to Kalshi back in October 2025. The core dispute in the case centers on whether federal commodity law preempts state law: state authorities argue event contracts are predictions subject to state regulation, while the CFTC and Kalshi maintain they are derivatives under the CFTC’s exclusive jurisdiction.

Lee Jae-myung: AI is reshaping the global industrial landscape, South Korea needs to invest boldly

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said today that AI-driven industrial transformation is reshaping the global industrial landscape, stressing that South Korea needs to take "bold" and "swift" investment actions to address this shift. Lee made the remarks at the opening ceremony of a policy briefing meeting hosted by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and other government agencies. "With the advent of artificial intelligence, the world is undergoing a major transformation, and industrial structures are being reshaped. At such a time, what we need are bold decisions, investments, and swift actions," he said. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing South Korea’s competitiveness, noting that the government’s role is to identify trends, plan for the future, and lay the foundation for innovation. Lee added that ensuring solid industrial growth potential and a robust energy security system is key to building a country resilient to external environmental changes. The South Korean government should make unremitting efforts to diversify its export markets and supply chains.

Analysis: Bitcoin short-term holders show extremely low activity, approaching the historical bottom zone.

South Korean crypto analyst Crypto Dan stated that Bitcoin is currently in a very cheap price range. From a cyclical standpoint, Bitcoin has reached a level similar to historical bottoms of past cycles. While it remains uncertain whether the lowest point has been hit, indicators show market participants’ interest in the crypto market is as low as it was during previous bottoms. Given the next bull cycle expected to start around 2027, the current price range is undoubtedly a bargain. A chart released by Crypto Dan reveals that Bitcoin’s Realized Market Cap to UTXO Ratio is currently at a historical low of around 5%, matching the lows seen in prior cycle bottoms. This indicates extremely low activity among short-term holders and weak market interest, mirroring typical historical bottom regions.
