The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced the establishment of a new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within its Enforcement Division, dedicated to investigating financial reporting fraud, accounting and auditing violations. David Woodcock, head of the SEC’s Enforcement Division, stated that the new unit will expand the SEC’s ability to combat misconduct in the accounting and auditing sectors, with a focus on financial fraud cases and related violations of securities laws. Composed of lawyers and accounting professionals, the unit will collaborate with other SEC divisions on investigations and enforcement actions. The SEC added that the unit will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the SEC in May 2026. Prior to joining, Zimmerman spent 12 years at an international law firm and most recently served as deputy general counsel at an international accounting and professional services firm.
