A man in Hebei Province, China, illegally raised funds using the concept of the "Metaverse" and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison

2026.06.17 16:09:55

On June 17, the High Court of Hebei Province in China released a typical case from its crackdown on illegal fundraising activities. A man promoted an investment project tied to the Metaverse through the Newmateworks platform, which is affiliated with the Yishang Community. He induced members of the public to invest, personally bringing in 19 total investors who put a combined 15.3936 million yuan into the scheme. Of that sum, 1.1014 million yuan has been refunded, leaving 14.2922 million yuan unrecovered. The court ruled the defendant used the emerging Metaverse technology concept as a cover for fraudulent marketing, violating China’s financial management laws. Given the huge amount of funds involved, his actions constituted the crime of illegal absorption of public deposits. He was sentenced to five years and four months in prison and ordered to pay a fine.

US media: U.S. European Command has issued a warning, stating it lacks sufficient forces to protect Israel.

According to The Washington Post, multiple officials said that Alexus Grynkewich, commander of U.S. European Command, privately warned the Pentagon this week that he lacks sufficient naval forces to continue protecting Israel from ballistic missile attacks, highlighting the resource strain on U.S. military forces from the ongoing Iran-related conflict. The commander stated that if he cannot secure an additional naval destroyer, he will be forced to choose between defending the U.S. homeland and defending Israel. A U.S. defense official noted that Grynkewich’s warning aligns with prior notifications from senior U.S. military leaders when they flag risks requiring national-level consideration. The official added that such scenarios often arise when combatant commands compete for limited resources and weaponry.

Hu Xiaowei, the mastermind behind Prince Group, has been deported to the United States.

Hu Xiaowei, a core figure of the "Prince Group" (also known by the alias "Hu Shi", previously rumored online to be the "mastermind behind Chen Zhi"), left Japan on July 29 and was deported to the United States. FBI agents have contacted him, and subsequent related investigations will be conducted in the U.S. While in Japan, Hu Xiaowei used a Cypriot passport and operated under the alias "Hu Shi". In June this year, he was arrested by Japanese police on suspicion of violating Japan's Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. On July 24, Japanese prosecutors filed a summary lawsuit against him, imposing a fine of approximately 100,000 RMB. Hu Xiaowei played a pivotal role in Chen Zhi's criminal group: he introduced Chen Zhi to the cyber gray industry and was Chen Zhi's "big brother". Hu Xiaowei is also known as Hu Yanming, Hu Shi (alias), and Chen Xiaoer. According to authoritative sources, Chen Xiaoer (sanctioned by the U.S.), Hu Yanming (subject to a restriction order issued by the Hong Kong Department of Justice), and Hu Xiaowei, the mastermind of the 2010 "Knight Attack Team" illegal computer system intrusion case cracked by Chongqing cyber police, are the same person. According to confessions from core members of the "Knight Attack Team" back then, Hu Xiaowei was one of only two leaders of the group, while Chen Zhi was a member and not on the list of 19 core arrest targets at the time.
