Bitcoin Pizza Day Protagonist Once 'Earned Thousands of Bitcoins in a Day,' Spent Nearly 10,000 BTC on Pizza in 2010

2025.05.22 16:57:01

On May 22nd, according to a report in Forbes, Laszlo Hanyecz, the programmer who is famous for spending 10,000 bitcoins on two Papa John's pizzas in 2010, was even more "prodigal" with his bitcoins than the public had imagined. It is possible that Hanyecz spent an additional 79,000 bitcoins on later pizza purchases, which would be worth more than 8.7 billion US dollars at the current exchange rates. In an interview in 2019, Hanyecz stated that he had spent a total of nearly 100,000 bitcoins on pizza in 2010 and that he didn't pay much attention to these transactions at that time. Hanyecz pointed out that at that time, users on the Bitcointalk forum would often give hundreds or thousands of bitcoins to newcomers. To prove his claims, Hanyecz provided the Bitcoin address listed in his first post on Bitcointalk as evidence. The wallet records show that from the creation of the wallet on April 10, 2010, until the pizza transaction was completed on August 4, Laszlo sent out more than 79,000 bitcoins. Ironically, the remaining bitcoins in the wallet are now only enough to buy a large pizza at the current exchange rate, and the last large transaction took place in June 2011, with a total outflow slightly exceeding 81,432 bitcoins. Where did Hanyecz's bitcoins come from? Between 2009 and 2010, the Bitcoin block reward was 50 bitcoins per block (plus transaction fees). Calculating based on an average of one block every ten minutes, Hanyecz's 81,432 bitcoins accounted for approximately 1.5% of the total mined supply at that time. Hanyecz was an early Bitcoin developer who not only created the first MacOS Bitcoin client but was also the first person after Satoshi Nakamoto to discover GPU mining. After he publicized this discovery in May 2010, the Bitcoin network's hashrate increased by 1,300 times by the end of the year. Ironically, it was the increased competition that prevented him from continuing to "earn thousands of bitcoins daily."

Analysis: The potential 'lost' Bitcoin supply hits an all-time high, accounting for approximately 17.7% of the circulating supply.

CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost noted in a post that the amount of Bitcoin supply considered "lost" has reached an all-time high, currently standing at 3.56 million BTC, accounting for roughly 17.7% of the circulating supply. His metric refers to BTC that has not moved for over 10 years. While a tiny number of long-dormant Bitcoin does reactivate in rare cases—such as in July 2025—this long-unmoved supply as a whole continues to grow. More than 14,000 BTC have joined this long-dormant supply category over the past 30 days. This trend naturally reduces the amount of Bitcoin actually in active circulation.

Prominent crypto trader: If Bitcoin reclaims the $69,500 level, it will officially confirm a shift to a bull market.

Well-known trader Killa posted that Bitcoin has returned above the 0.8 level of the Mayer Multiple, after its price briefly dipped below that threshold earlier. He pointed out that in 2022, BTC also briefly fell below this level before reclaiming it. Killa stated that the real confirmation signal in 2022 came when Bitcoin reclaimed its 200-day moving average, following which the bull market began. Currently, BTC’s 200-day moving average is approximately $69,500. He believes that all that’s needed next is for Bitcoin to break back above and hold the 200-day moving average; once that happens, the market can be considered to have officially entered a bull market.

Tether CEO: The company is not building any blockchain, nor does it have any related plans.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino has stated that Tether is not building any blockchain and has no related plans. The stablecoin issuer will remain chain-agnostic, supporting multiple blockchains as transmission networks for USDT. This comes after CoinMarketCap previously analyzed that stablecoin firms including Stripe, Circle, and Tether are each developing their own dedicated blockchains. Ardoino’s response denies the claim that Tether is building its own blockchain.

Analyst: Bitcoin may bottom out in October, suitable for dollar-cost averaging in the range of $48,000 to $62,000

Crypto analyst Ali Charts published a post stating that based on Bitcoin’s four-year cycle, he predicts BTC will hit the bottom of this market cycle between October 6 and 16. He argues that before the final capitulation phase arrives, investors should implement a dollar-cost averaging (DCA) strategy within the $62,000 to $48,000 range to gradually accumulate Bitcoin. He judges the current bear market is nearing its end, adding that now is the time to start turning bullish.

Investors who bought Samsung and SK Hynix leveraged ETFs at their highs are still incurring heavy losses; some of these products would need to rise by more than 300% to break even.

According to South Korean media reports, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have recently rebounded, with their respective single-stock leveraged ETFs also surging sharply. However, investors who purchased near the June 25 high still face significant losses. As of August 14, Samsung Electronics was down 23.43% from its June 25 closing price, while SK Hynix fell 43.61% over the same period. Data shows that the seven Samsung Electronics single-stock leveraged ETFs have posted an average loss of 52.25% since June 25, and the seven SK Hynix leveraged ETFs have averaged a 76.51% loss. If investors had invested 1 million won each on that date, their holdings are now worth roughly 478,000 won and 235,000 won respectively. Based on current net asset values, the two types of ETFs would need to rise by approximately 109.4% and 325.7% respectively to break even. Since these leveraged ETFs track twice the daily return of their underlying assets, the required underlying asset gain to recover principal cannot be simply calculated as twice the ETF’s required increase, and repeated price fluctuations will also lead to volatility drag. Assuming the underlying assets rise by the same percentage every trading day for the next 20 sessions with no declines, Samsung Electronics would need to climb around 45.2% from current levels to 398,600 won, and SK Hynix would need to rise roughly 109.1% to 3,439,000 won, to erase the average losses of the related leveraged ETFs. Currently, the 12-month forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have fallen to 4.5x and 3.7x respectively. Kim Dong-won, head of research at KB Securities, stated that storage demand is expected to strengthen further in the coming years, and he projects both companies could see a revaluation of their stock prices starting from the third quarter.
