Metaplanet's stock price has surged by 4000% due to its Bitcoin strategy, and it is expected to turn a profit for the first time after six consecutive years of losses.

On February 10th, based on Bloomberg's compiled data, the stock price of Metaplanet Inc. has increased by more than 4,000% in the past 12 months. This makes it the best-performing stock in Japan during the same period and one of the top gainers globally. Simon Gerovich, the CEO of Metaplanet, who was previously a Goldman Sachs equity derivatives trader, stated that he was attracted to this idea after hearing Michael Saylor's strategy on a podcast. Since 2013, he has been operating Metaplanet as a hotel developer under the name Red Planet Japan Inc. However, when the pandemic led to an economic slowdown and forced the company to close most of its hotels (leaving only one), he shifted to a "Bitcoin-first strategy" in early 2024. Since then, the number of Metaplanet shareholders has grown to nearly 50,000, increasing by 500% by 2024. Shareholders include the Capital Group (which also invested in Strategy), but the vast majority are retail investors, and many of them have limited experience with volatile crypto assets. The company has been reporting losses for six consecutive years, and it is expected that the fourth-quarter earnings report, which will be released later on Monday, will bring news of the company's first-ever profit.
