AI Data Center "Gold Rush" Sparks Controversy: Will It Impact Bitcoin Network Security

March 16 — As electricity demand from AI data centers surges, the market is fiercely debating whether this will undermine Bitcoin mining or even threaten the Bitcoin network’s security. Cryptocurrency trader Ran Neuner said on social media that AI has become Bitcoin mining’s biggest competitor, as both rely heavily on electricity resources. He noted Bitcoin mining generates roughly $57 to $129 per megawatt-hour, while AI data centers can bring in $200 to $500 per megawatt-hour — up to eight times more than mining. As a result, more and more mining firms are pivoting to AI businesses. Neuner listed several mining companies that have embraced AI: - Core Scientific recently secured a $1 billion credit line for its AI hosting business; - MARA Holdings filed documents with the U.S. SEC, hinting it may sell Bitcoin to fund its AI transformation; - Hut 8 signed a $7 billion AI infrastructure deal with Google in December 2023; - Cipher Mining also cut its mining power to focus on AI computing. Additionally, Jihan Wu (Bitmain co-founder) is reportedly no longer mining and has moved into the AI space. Neuner argues that if miners keep exiting, a drop in Bitcoin’s hash rate will raise the risk of a “51% attack” on the network. The Bitcoin network’s hash rate is currently down about 14.5% from its October 2023 peak. However, some industry insiders disagree. Adam Back — a Bitcoin OG developer and cryptographer — noted that even if some miners switch to AI, Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment mechanism will automatically lower mining difficulty, letting remaining miners become more profitable and drawing hash power back to the network.

Australian Senate Committee Backs Crypto Regulation Bill: Exchanges to Apply for Financial License

March 16 The Australian Senate Standing Committee on Economics has recommended passing the **Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025**, which would require crypto exchanges to secure a financial license and be integrated into the existing financial regulatory framework. In its report, the committee noted the bill would substantially strengthen Australia’s digital asset industry regulatory framework, offer stronger consumer protections, aim to stay tech-neutral in rulemaking, and align with global regulatory frameworks. Under the bill, firms running digital asset trading platforms or tokenization custody services will be classified as financial service providers and must apply for an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL). Regulation will target intermediaries that hold user assets or facilitate transaction matching—not the blockchain technology itself. The bill will also legally define key terms like "digital tokens" and set rules for asset custody,

Shutdown Twice in Three Days! Fujairah Port Hit Again as Global Oil Tops $100

**March 16th** — The Fujairah Port, a key energy hub in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was targeted in another attack on Monday, forcing a suspension of oil loading operations and pushing international oil prices above $100 per barrel. Sources say the port is assessing damage from the latest strike and has implemented precautionary measures to halt loading. This marks the second shutdown at the facility in three days: a drone attack on Saturday sparked a fire, followed by a brief resumption of operations over the weekend. Fujairah Port is a critical crude oil and fuel export hub for the UAE — the country’s only oil export route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, linking to the terminal of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s (ADNOC) main oilfield pipeline. With shipping in the strait nearly disrupted by ongoing conflicts, the port’s significance to global energy supplies has grown further. Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
