Attendees include Elon Musk, David Sacks, Sam Altman, and Jensen Huang. The meeting will be held in North Carolina, U.S., from September 1 to 2, with technology and trade officials from over 20 countries participating. Bloomberg reports that Musk and Sacks will speak virtually on the first day, while Altman and Huang will appear in person on the second day. The U.S. wants G20 members to adopt looser tech regulation: avoid establishing new dedicated regulatory bodies, rely as much as possible on existing industry regulators, and allow governments and enterprises to jointly test new technologies like AI. The framework, dubbed the "Carolina Principles," is non-binding. If member states reach a consensus, the principles will be included in a joint statement and submitted for discussion at the December G20 Leaders’ Summit. This approach is essentially the international version of the Trump administration’s domestic AI policy. The White House explicitly stated in March this year that it would not establish a new federal AI rulemaking body, instead letting existing industry regulators and standards bodies oversee AI, while minimizing regulations that hinder AI deployment. Now, the U.S. is preparing to extend this same set of rules to the G20.
