AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion, Fei-Fei Li to Serve as AMD’s Chief Scientist.

According to Reuters, AMD announced it will acquire World Labs, an AI startup founded by AI scientist Li Feifei, in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.2 billion, with the deal expected to close by the end of 2026. After the transaction wraps up, Li Feifei will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. The acquisition will grant AMD access to World Labs’ research capabilities in spatial intelligence—a technology designed to help AI systems understand, reason about, and simulate 3D environments and physical interactions, with applications spanning robotics, simulation, design, and other real-world use cases. AMD said World Labs’ research will help the company understand emerging AI workloads and guide its hardware, software, and systems technology roadmap. Li Feifei noted that World Labs has been in deep technical collaboration with AMD since last year, initially focusing on optimizing model training and inference using AMD GPUs. As the partnership advanced, both parties identified synergies in integrating software, hardware, foundation models, and application ecosystems. World Labs completed a $1 billion funding round earlier this year, in which AMD also participated.

Cross-chain transaction protocol Relay suffered a sandwich attack due to an API vulnerability, and will compensate approximately $312,000.

Cross-chain transaction protocol Relay has disclosed that its API exposed pending transaction information, enabling MEV searchers to front-run and sandwich user orders. The incident occurred between September 12 and 26, with activity concentrated from September 23 to 26. Approximately 5,600 users were affected, suffering a median loss of around $11.88, while searchers collectively profited roughly $136,000. Relay has awarded a $50,000 bug bounty to @Outputlayer, the entity that discovered and reported the vulnerability. The protocol will also automatically compensate affected user wallets a total of approximately $312,000, with no separate application required. Relay noted that it will continue to enhance execution quality and privacy protection across its transaction paths.

Anthropic rolls out Sonnet 5.5 update: No price cut, but fewer tokens are required for the same tasks.

Beating AI News Flash: Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, continuing to focus on daily work and programming use cases. Its API unit prices remain unchanged from Sonnet 5: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, exactly half the price of Opus 5.5. Anthropic states the new model is over 30% faster in output, typically requires fewer tokens to complete the same task, cutting per-task costs by up to 30%. The most notable improvement is in agent programming. In Terminal-Bench 4.0, which tests models on completing multi-step tasks via the command line, Sonnet 5.5 jumps from Sonnet 5’s 10.3% to 70.6%, surpassing Opus 5.5’s 66.4%. However, among the 8 official benchmarks released, Sonnet 5.5 only leads Opus in this single category; the other 7 still favor Opus 5.5, though most gaps are narrow. Anthropic clarifies that complex, open-ended tasks requiring ongoing judgment remain better suited for Opus 5.5. But actual per-task savings may not be half. Artificial Analysis measured an Intelligence Index of 56 for Sonnet 5.5 at its highest Max reasoning level, versus 58 for Opus 5.5 Max. However, Sonnet 5.5 used an average of ~193,000 output tokens per task, resulting in a per-task cost of $7.60 in this test—higher than Opus 5.5 Max’s $5.98. Whether it saves money depends heavily on the task and reasoning level selected. Claude Sonnet 5.5 is now available on Claude, Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. Haiku 5.5 will launch in the coming weeks.
