Tavus launches Griffin: A 1-minute video chat with 54 participants, 26 of whom mistook the other side for a real person.

2026.10.02 08:29:07

Beating AI News Flash: AI video firm Tavus has launched Griffin, billed as the first Human Interaction Model focused on real-time face-to-face communication. Griffin can see and listen while speaking, reacting in real time to the other party’s expressions, movements, and pauses, and pauses immediately if a user interrupts mid-sentence. Tavus recruited 54 participants from the U.S. and Europe to hold 1-minute video calls with Griffin-Lite, without disclosing in advance that the counterpart was an AI. The result: 26 participants, or 48%, believed they had chatted with a real person. By comparison, Tavus’ prior generation model Phoenix-4.5 saw only 1 out of 41 participants (2.4%) make the same judgment error in a similar test. Tavus thus claims Griffin is the first model to pass the "real-time video Turing Test". However, the test was self-organized by Tavus with a sample size of just 54, and no larger independent replication has been conducted to date. Griffin-Lite also topped NVIDIA’s VideoFDB full-duplex audio-video evaluation, scoring 3.83/5, close to the human benchmark of 3.92. The previous highest public baseline, Gemini 2.5 + Anam, scored 2.80. Griffin-Lite is currently only available to a small group of testers and has not yet been officially offered to regular customers.

ByteDance is in talks to acquire MediaTek's AI chips, while Qualcomm has previously secured orders for millions of such chips.

Insight: Beating AI Newsflash – ByteDance is in advanced negotiations with MediaTek to source custom ASIC chips for its data centers. Bloomberg reported on October 15, citing people familiar with the matter, that the two sides are close to a deal, though details including procurement volume, chip specifications, and delivery timeline remain undisclosed. If finalized, ByteDance would become MediaTek’s second major ASIC client after Google. This is not ByteDance’s first foray into securing data center chips from mobile chipmakers: in May this year, Bloomberg revealed the company had reached an agreement with Qualcomm to source millions of ASICs for powering AI Agents, with Qualcomm set to help bring ByteDance’s self-developed chip designs to production. The latest engagement with MediaTek signals ByteDance is expanding its custom chip supply channels to alleviate computing power pressure stemming from U.S. export restrictions and domestic chip capacity shortages. MediaTek, which previously focused primarily on its mobile processor business, has now entered Google’s TPU supply chain and begun competing with players like Broadcom and Qualcomm for data center orders. The firm projects its data center AI chip revenue will exceed $2 billion this year. In August, Nvidia also subscribed to $3.5 billion in MediaTek’s convertible bonds and announced a partnership to develop custom AI infrastructure. While such ASICs can optimize performance, power efficiency, and cost for specific tasks, it remains unconfirmed whether the chips ByteDance is negotiating to purchase will be used for model training or inference.

Arthur Hayes: If an AI trading crash ultimately triggers a trillion-dollar market rescue, it will be favorable for Bitcoin's bull run.

Arthur Hayes posted on social media that if AI trading eventually crashes, it could trigger a trillion-dollar-scale market bailout, a scenario that would drive up Bitcoin and Ethereum’s prices. “Will AI eventually crash? I don’t know, and I won’t bet on either side. Instead, just trade for that upcoming trillion-dollar-scale market bailout: go long on BTC and ETH.”
