BNY Mellon and Citadel Securities complete US Treasury tokenization transaction, exploring ways to accelerate Wall Street financing.

On Tuesday, BNY Mellon, the world's largest custodian bank, and trading giant Citadel Securities announced they have completed a tokenized U.S. Treasury bond transaction, designed to demonstrate how blockchain technology can accelerate the transition of assets from trade settlement to financing and improve collateral circulation efficiency. U.S. Treasury bonds are key collateral for banks and trading firms to secure short-term loans and fund trading activities, but under traditional settlement systems, transferring bonds between different accounts and systems takes time, which can lead to temporary lock-up of funds and assets. This transaction, which connects settlement and financing via tokenized Treasuries, is expected to enable institutions to reuse collateral more quickly and unlock liquidity. BNY said it plans to further launch digital cash and tokenized deposit services to support blockchain-based settlement and financing, and also plans to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement system for Fed-eligible securities and U.S. tri-party repo transactions in 2027 to cover European and Asian trading sessions. As institutions including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan Chase continue to explore asset tokenization, traditional financial firms are leveraging blockchain to cut settlement times, automate business processes, and boost asset liquidity.

Applied Materials is investing $5 billion to build a chip R&D center, with the goal of cutting AI chip development cycles in half.

Applied Materials, the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer, has officially inaugurated the EPIC Semiconductor R&D Center. Located in Sunnyvale, California, the project is expected to have a total investment of $5 billion, aimed at accelerating innovation in advanced chip technology for the AI era. Spanning approximately 600,000 square feet, the EPIC Center will host research teams from industry giants including Intel, TSMC, Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, who will collaborate with Applied Materials engineers on R&D and gain early access to the latest semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Applied Materials noted that the center is expected to cut the cycle for next-generation chip architectures from concept development to commercialization, from the usual 10 to 12 years to as little as 6 years. The facility is primarily for R&D rather than mass chip production, so it does not signal a direct near-term resurgence in U.S. chip manufacturing capacity, but is expected to strengthen Silicon Valley’s competitiveness in advanced semiconductors and AI chips. Applied Materials’ U.S. shares closed 2.88% lower on Tuesday, turned positive in after-hours trading, and are now up 0.74%, with its market capitalization rebounding to $8.3 billion.

An OpenAI engineer has been arrested on suspicion of planting eavesdropping devices in an executive meeting room, with an AI model assisting in identifying the suspect.

Beating AI Insight News: 35-year-old Saudi national and OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested by the FBI on October 9, suspected of installing a hidden recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. The U.S. Department of Justice said he is charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, and if convicted, faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. According to the criminal complaint, company employees discovered an encrypted recording device behind a television in the conference room around September 30. Prosecutors noted the suspect previously used internal company tools to look up the firm’s office address, conference rooms, and executive meeting schedules; a chatbot account linked to his spouse also asked how to build, hide, and remotely access a continuous recording device. OpenAI stated that it used its own models to analyze the device and its source, ultimately identifying the employee involved, and has fired him. To date, the company has found no evidence that the suspect accessed or stole model weights, source code, or customer data without authorization. The FBI is still investigating the case, with the next detention hearing scheduled for October 19.

Retail investors purchased a whopping $91 billion worth of US stocks in a single week, setting a new nearly 15-year record, with AI and semiconductors leading capital inflows.

Citadel Securities’ Head of Stock and Derivatives Strategy Scott Rubner noted in a new research report that last week, retail investors net bought $9.1 billion worth of U.S. stocks via the platform, marking the largest single-week net buying record in nearly 15 years. The funds primarily flowed into AI-related stocks and ETFs. Semiconductor stocks saw a net purchase of around $2.6 billion, while AI infrastructure-related stocks recorded a net buy of roughly $2.4 billion. Rubner explained that this round of buying reflects increased directional bets by retail investors, not a rise in overall trading activity: retail buying volume exceeded selling volume by 2.7%, with directional skew at the roughly 90th percentile over the past year, while overall trading activity was only at the 42nd percentile. Earlier, Rubner had predicted retail funds would re-enter the market in October. The latest data also shows that despite lingering concerns over an AI bubble, retail investors are still piling into the AI and semiconductor sectors.
