Control of the Strait of Hormuz intensifies; a Singapore-registered cargo ship sinks, weighing on US and Asian stock markets.

According to CNBC, tensions between Iran and the U.S. over control of the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate. Ali Ozmaei, head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said Iran is waiting for an opportunity to attack U.S. warships, and threatened that if the U.S. believes the strait is open, it can approach further. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) responded that U.S. military forces and regional partners remain firmly in control of the key waterway. Shipping security risks have risen in tandem. A Singapore-flagged container ship, the GFS Pride, sank after being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz; all crew members were evacuated with no injuries. Another Singapore-flagged vessel, the GFS Giselle, was also attacked, sustained hull damage, and later reached a safe anchorage. Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) condemned the attacks as unprovoked, unjustified, and in violation of international law. On the macro front, U.S. September CPI rose 3.7% year-over-year, above the market consensus estimate of 3.6%; core CPI rose 2.6% year-over-year, also exceeding expectations. Energy prices rose 5.2% month-over-month, continuing to fuel inflationary pressures. Affected by the inflation data, the S&P 500 fell 1.11%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.88%, and South Korea's Kospi index plunged 7.26%. Analysts note that Trump's temporary relaxation of restrictions on Russian diesel exports may have limited impact on easing energy inflation. Separately, Elon Musk said the military-grade Starshield system is owned and controlled by the U.S. government, with usage limits for Ukraine determined by the U.S. military and ultimately approved by the U.S. president. Meanwhile, TSMC's third-quarter net profit rose 68.7% year-over-year, marking a sixth consecutive quarter of record results, reflecting sustained strong demand for AI chips.

Fears of an AI bubble spurred safe-haven buying, pushing U.S. Treasury yields to a three-week low.

US September CPI rose 0.6% month-over-month and 3.7% year-over-year, both exceeding expectations, yet Treasuries saw no sell-off. On Thursday, the US 10-year Treasury yield fell as much as 8.4 basis points to 5.105%, hitting a three-week low. Ongoing declines in AI tech stocks and rising associated credit risks drove capital back into Treasuries, outweighing rate-hike fears sparked by hotter inflation. Market concerns are spreading from overvalued AI stocks to the debt financing model for data center construction. Data center operator CoreWeave’s debt financing size is nearly $48 billion, with some of its bond yields rising to around 15% to 16%, sparking concerns over the AI sector’s debt-servicing capacity and private credit risks. BlackRock has downgraded its rating on US equities to "neutral", while upgrading its outlook on Treasuries and showing a preference for short-term Treasuries. Analysts note that recent trends show Treasuries are regaining their safe-haven status during stock market declines, suggesting the traditional stock-bond hedge relationship may be recovering. However, US inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, and fiscal deficit and Treasury supply pressures have not abated, so whether Treasuries can sustain their safe-haven function remains to be seen.

OpenCode Opens DeepSeek V4.1 Flash for Free; Its Context Window Is Just 1/5 of the Paid Version’s.

Beating AI News Flash: OpenCode has announced limited-time free access to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Users can now select "DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Free" from the model list, with no charges for input and output tokens. However, the free version only offers a 200,000-token context window, an 80% reduction from the paid version’s 1 million tokens. When handling large code repositories or long-running coding agents, the free version is more prone to hitting the context limit. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash was already integrated into OpenCode as early as September 10. On October 12, OpenCode had just raised the V4.1 Flash usage quota in its $10 monthly Go plan to a value of $80, and has now added a separate free tier. OpenCode’s official documentation confirms this free access is time-limited, though no end date has been disclosed. The platform also promises the free tier follows a zero-data-retention policy, and will not use user content for model training.

Claude Code introduces idle compression: automatically saves tokens after 54 minutes of inactivity, though it may result in lost context details.

Beating AI Express (Dongcha) News: Anthropic has added Idle Compaction to Claude Code, a feature designed specifically to reduce token consumption after long session interruptions. Previously, when users step away from their computers for a period and return to their conversation after prompt caching expires, the model has to reprocess the large volume of prior content. Now, Claude Code automatically compresses long conversations into summaries before the cache expires. When users come back, the model only needs to process the summary instead of the full conversation history, cutting the cost of subsequent API calls. This feature is currently available for the terminal version, with default settings requiring sessions to use 1 hour of prompt caching, a context window of at least 200,000 tokens, and the computer to remain awake. Compaction triggers after approximately 54 minutes of continuous inactivity. However, the cost savings come with tradeoffs: after compaction, Claude can only operate based on the summary, potentially forgetting specific prior instructions, technical details, and decision-making processes. As early as early October, developers complained on GitHub that they were running around 20 long sessions simultaneously, and 7 of them were automatically compacted overnight, forcing them to re-add key context. Anthropic later added an off switch: users can set `"idleCompaction": false` in their `settings.json` file, and also adjust the default 200,000-token trigger threshold.

Hyperliquid Founder Proposes New Regulatory Approach: Regulate Trading Service Providers, Not the Blockchain Itself

Hyperliquid co-founder Jeff Yan told Bloomberg’s *Odd Lots* podcast that regulatory obligations should be imposed on financial service providers operating markets on the Hyperliquid blockchain, rather than the blockchain network itself, to lower compliance burdens for platforms entering the U.S. market. Yan drew an analogy to internet infrastructure: as the underlying liquidity and trading infrastructure, blockchain should not directly shoulder all regulatory responsibilities of traditional trading platforms. Instead, compliance duties should fall on service providers that actually operate the markets and hold relevant control rights. Yan noted Hyperliquid does not seek to replace Wall Street’s traditional financial institutions, but rather aims to provide them with underlying trading technology—similar to how Amazon Web Services (AWS) delivers computing infrastructure to businesses. He added the team is actively working to build Hyperliquid into an infrastructure covering all types of financial markets. Currently, Hyperliquid remains unavailable to U.S. users, but Payward, Kraken’s parent company, plans to use its technology to offer derivative services to U.S. investors through a regulated trading platform.
