Vercel: Open-source models account for 71.5% of total tokens consumed, with Chinese models driving significant business for US-based inference service providers.

Beating AI Insight News Flash: Vercel releases its latest AI Gateway usage report. In September, open-source models processed 71.5% of the platform’s tokens, but their estimated call fees (based on public pricing) accounted for only 23%. A month earlier, open-source models’ token share stood at just ~56%. DeepSeek led in volume: its models took 58% of tokens but only 6.6% of estimated fees. DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash alone handled nearly half the tokens, contributing just 2.6% of costs. Conversely, MoonShot AI’s Kimi made up 3.6% of tokens but 13.2% of fees. Low-cost models handle most requests, while higher-unit-price models like Kimi K3 drive more spending. A notable trend: Chinese models are generating huge business for U.S. inference service providers. In September, nearly 70% of estimated call fees for Chinese models went to U.S. providers, up from less than 10% in December 2025. DeepSeek itself processed over 80% of its model’s tokens, but U.S. providers charged higher average rates—~40% of fees went to U.S. firms. These providers don’t need to develop their own models; they simply deploy DeepSeek’s open weights, offer compute power and API services, and charge customers. Meanwhile, total AI call fees on Vercel in September were ~13 times higher than in December 2025, while average per-token prices fell 47%. Among active high-volume paying teams, nearly a third switched their most-used model vendor. Enterprises can call different models via a unified API, eliminating the need to integrate with each vendor separately. Even for the same model, users can choose different inference providers. Model developers no longer monopolize call revenue: inference service providers and platforms like Vercel (which control developer access) are also competing for this business.

Japan's three major banks jointly complete empirical test for the joint issuance and cross-border payments of yen stablecoin.

Mizuho Bank, MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), MUFG Trust Bank, and TISI announced that they have completed a joint multi-bank stablecoin issuance and cross-border payment pilot program from July 17 to 23, 2026. The project is supported by Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA)’s Fintech Pilot Center Payment Innovation Program (PIP). The three banks acted as co-principals, with MUFG Trust Bank serving as trustee. Under the trust agreement, the stablecoin was issued as a specific trust beneficial right per Japan’s Funds Settlement Act, using cross-border settlements between Mitsubishi Corporation’s Japanese and overseas bases as the use case to verify regulatory compliance and operational feasibility. All parties confirmed the system’s security and the viability of the multi-bank issuance model, and completed end-to-end verification of the stablecoin’s issuance, transfer, and redemption processes. The three banks previously stated plans to launch live transactions within the 2026 fiscal year, and established a joint discussion committee. With deposits as reserves and circulation limited to bank-verified users as core design premises, they will continue advancing the implementation of stablecoins and on-chain finance.

Analysis: Bitcoin short-term holders’ holdings rise to 4.08 million coins, up 422,000 from July’s low.

Crypto analyst Axel Adler Jr stated that short-term holders currently hold approximately 4.08 million bitcoin, the highest level since mid-June. Since the July 29 low, this holding has risen by around 422,000 units, a 12% increase. Of that total, some 154,000 bitcoin were added in the first two weeks of October, and a further 48,000 in the past week. He added that most new buyers entered the market in the $82,000 to $86,000 range. As of press time, the average cost basis for short-term holders stands at roughly $74,900, with their unrealized profit buffer narrowing from about 16% to around 10%. Adler noted that $74,900 is the breakeven point for this group, and bitcoin prices have remained above this cost level since August 20. A drop below this threshold would push the group into overall unrealized losses, potentially intensifying selling pressure.
