Analysis: The flash crash of perpetual contracts tied to US-listed AI concept stocks originated on Binance, triggering a subsequent chain of liquidations.

Tread.fi CEO DYJ released an analysis of the flash crash in US-listed AI concept stock perpetual contracts in the early hours of today, pointing out that the sell-off originated from Binance. A trader liquidated roughly $2 million in long positions of SanDisk (SNDK), triggering sharp declines across other markets due to the order book’s shallow depth. Per the transaction timeline he outlined, Binance saw large aggressive sell orders for SNDK first: around $407,000 in the first second, then approximately $1.03 million the next; MU also started selling in that same second. DYJ added that Hyperliquid subsequently saw sweep orders, with about 10 addresses submitting immediate-or-cancel (IOC) sell orders concentrated on SNDK, SOXL, DRAM, SKHX, SKHY, and MU within 1.8 seconds, followed by a second round of synchronized sell orders. All these orders were for opening new short positions, not just reducing existing ones. In the minute of the first concentrated sell, Binance’s trading volumes for SNDK and MU stood at roughly $21.9 million and $5.1 million respectively, while Trade.xyz’s corresponding volumes were about $3.1 million and $300,000. Hyperliquid’s MU trading volume then surged to $10.8 million and $9.5 million in the next two minutes, a phase DYJ attributed to liquidation cascades.

Perplexity integrates viral reverse engineering tool REA, enabling AI to replicate 5 software applications including Figma without source code.

Beating AI Express (Insight) – Perplexity has announced the open-source integration of its reverse engineering tool REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) into its Computer feature. Users only need to tell the AI which software they want to replicate; without access to the original source code, it analyzes the software’s operation and attempts to build a functionally similar version. Perplexity showcased five replicated works, all available as web versions for online testing: 1. Figma: Supports layers, auto-layout, real-time multi-user collaboration, account login, and cross-device synchronization. 2. LibreOffice Calc: Supports cell editing, formula writing, and automatic chart updates when data is modified. 3. Photopea: A web-based alternative to Photoshop, supporting layers, masks, color grading, and text editing. 4. Harvey: An AI tool for legal professionals, capable of searching contracts, comparing versions, marking clauses per specified rules, and attaching original text references. 5. Audacity: Supports audio editing, mixing, volume adjustment, fade-in/fade-out, and WAV file export. REA is open-sourced by developer morluto, and works with tools like Ghidra and Hopper to analyze internal functions, call relationships, and operational behavior of programs. It can also inspect web pages, JavaScript, and Electron applications. However, this does not mean the AI can fully replicate commercial software; the REA creator explicitly states the tool cannot guarantee full recovery of the original source code. Perplexity is offering limited-time free credits for this feature: until October 31, users can access up to 10,000 free credits per person for `/reverse-engineer` tasks.

Former Mt.Gox CEO questions insufficient communication over the Ledger hardware implant incident; Pascal Gauthier hits back: "You are no white knight"

Crypto hardware wallet maker Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier has hit back at criticism from former Mt.Gox CEO Mark Karpelès, saying: “Coming from the ex-Mt.Gox CEO… c’mon, you’re no white knight—get real.” Earlier, Karpelès slammed Ledger for inadequate communication over hardware implant attacks, claiming that more robust outreach at the time—rather than just a single article on Ledger Academy—could have prevented over $90 million in losses. He also questioned why Ledger had failed to exercise sufficient vigilance regarding mass-produced advanced implant components. Karpelès later clarified that Mt.Gox had no involvement in the incident, noting Ledger received multiple reports of implant components as early as early 2026, with a March publication showcasing advanced mass-produced implant components. He added that he had hoped Ledger would learn from Mt.Gox’s failures to adopt higher standards for security and information disclosure.

South Korea will convene five major cryptocurrency exchanges on October 20 to solicit opinions on the taxation of crypto assets in 2027.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean government will convene representatives from five major crypto asset trading platforms and the Digital Asset Exchange Association (DAXA) on October 20 to solicit industry input on crypto asset taxation originally scheduled to take effect in January 2027. This tax scheme has been delayed three times previously. The government is still proceeding with preparations for implementation as planned, and any further delay would require approval from the National Assembly. Under the existing framework, annual income from crypto asset transfers and lending, after deducting a basic exemption of 2.5 million won, is subject to a 22% tax rate including local income tax. The industry notes that specific tax standards for activities like staking, airdrops, hard forks, and DeFi transactions remain unclear, while issues such as tax source identification, declaration and payment infrastructure, and loss carryover deductions also need resolution, hence supporting a delay in implementation. A member of the Democratic Party of Korea submitted a bill amendment on October 16, proposing to effectively postpone the taxation to 2029. Meanwhile, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) is advancing the government draft of the Digital Asset Basic Law, which is expected to be finalized by the end of this month and undergo inter-party consultations. Key disputes include limits on shareholdings of major exchange stakeholders and the requirement for won-denominated stablecoin issuers to be bank-controlled entities.
