Why has DeepSeek's new version suddenly become more capable? Foreign media expose inside details of the Astra distillation, Liang Wenfeng compromises amid competitive pressure.

Breaking news from Dongcha Beating AI: DeepSeek’s new model has seen a huge capability boost, likely thanks to Astra. The Information, citing multiple sources with direct knowledge, reports that DeepSeek’s V4.1-Flash-1017, updated on October 17, and Moonshot AI’s newly released Kimi K3.1 Pro both made extensive use of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra outputs for distillation during training. The new DeepSeek model performed particularly well on browser operation tasks: in 180 real web task tests from Browser Use, its score rose from 70.9 in the old version to 75.0, close to Astra’s 77.9. However, its per-question model inference cost is only $0.22, compared to Astra’s $10.77—nearly a 49x difference. Previously, Claude was the main target for distillation among Chinese AI firms. But Anthropic has tightened its safeguards over the past two months, making it far harder to extract the model’s reasoning processes, so domestic labs have turned their attention to Astra. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng was initially reluctant to rely on distillation for V4’s development, but after seeing domestic competitors like Zhipu AI’s GLM make progress via distillation, he ultimately caved to competitive pressure.

Tencent launches Buddy One: an AI tool supporting cross-app information retrieval, featuring unified accounts and point systems.

Beating AI News Flash, October 29 – Tencent officially launched Buddy One, integrating WorkBuddy, Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting, Tencent Cloud Drive, and ima into a unified AI office ecosystem. After linking accounts, users can directly instruct WorkBuddy to search for and integrate information across applications, eliminating the need for repeated authorization or copy-pasting. For instance, it can combine Tencent Meeting minutes, old plans in Tencent Docs, and the ima knowledge base to generate a new proposal with source references. Tencent also unified its points system: WorkBuddy points are usable across Tencent Docs, ima, and Tencent Cloud Drive, though points previously purchased separately in each app will not be merged. The official Buddy One VIP plan is priced at 700 yuan/month, including 50,000 monthly general points, 1TB cross-product shared storage, and benefits such as WorkBuddy Premium, Tencent Meeting Pro, and Tencent Docs Super Member Plus. Tencent Cloud Drive, launched alongside, serves as the unified storage provider. Currently, the rolled-out features mainly include account linking, cross-app search, and points sharing; true cross-app memory sharing is not yet available. WorkBuddy PC version 5.9.0 or higher is required to use the service. Account linking is free, but unlinking is not supported at this time.

Prediction markets including Polymarket face strict regulation in Australia, with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) confirming it has not received any operation applications.

According to Bloomberg, Sarah Court, chair of Australia’s Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), told a parliamentary hearing that the regulator has not received any applications from prediction market operators. Platforms like Polymarket may face strict regulation in Australia, and any operating license applications will also undergo rigorous scrutiny. Court noted that prediction market trading mechanisms are similar to binary options already banned in Australia, featuring all-or-nothing outcomes, while their underlying assets are often unrelated to investment or financial markets. Australian users can directly access such overseas platforms, but are not protected by local financial regulations, and lack access to dispute resolution and customer fund protection measures.

Update to Ethereum’s EIP-8450 Proposal: Proposes a Quantum-Resistant Validator Public Key Registration Mechanism

According to Ethereum's GitHub discussion page, the EIP-8450 proposal has been recently updated, aiming to introduce an anti-quantum public key registration mechanism for Ethereum validators. The mechanism adopts hash-based cryptography schemes, including leanXMSS keys and VRF roots, to enhance the resilience of the validator key system against future quantum computing threats. The update clarifies that anti-quantum key registration and replacement will be authorized via BLS signature keys, with a replacement delay of at least one epoch and anti-replay mechanisms set in place. The proposal remains in the Draft stage and has not been deployed yet.
