Tom Lee’s analysis of Binance’s hack: The stolen amount is massive, but the limited price drop is a bullish signal

Bitmine Chairman Thomas "Tom" Lee said in a recent announcement: "Late last week, Binance was hacked, with $6.3 billion in customer funds stolen. According to reports from Binance and other media outlets, the breach originated from a contractor gaining access to Binance’s corporate infrastructure. The FBI has named North Korea as the perpetrator. While this is a terrible development, in my view, the relatively muted reaction from the crypto market is very constructive, especially when compared to market responses to large-scale crypto thefts in the past." Lee added: "In February 2025, Bybit was also targeted by North Korean hackers (using a completely different modus operandi), with $1.5 billion in customer crypto assets stolen. On the day the Bybit theft was announced, Ethereum (ETH) dropped 8% and fell 20% within a week. By contrast, since the Binance theft was disclosed, ETH has only fallen 4%. We believe that despite this theft being roughly four times larger than the Bybit incident, the market’s reaction is far milder." Bitmine outlines six reasons for the muted market response to the Binance hack: 1. Binance has sufficient financial capacity to cover all customer losses. 2. There has been no cascading collapse of DeFi protocols, unlike what occurred after the Bybit theft. 3. The industry’s rapid action reduced potential losses by 50%. 4. The FBI named North Korea (DPRK) as the responsible party just two days after the hack, whereas in past thefts, authorities took up to 180 days to identify the DPRK. 5. The breach was a "corporate infiltration" of Binance’s infrastructure, not a vulnerability in the blockchain itself. 6. The limited price downside signals that the crypto "bull market" is ongoing, despite recent price declines. Tom Lee noted that overall, Bitmine believes this demonstrates the crypto industry is growing increasingly resilient and better equipped to absorb state-sponsored attacks on financial infrastructure.

Tom Lee: The crypto market has hit bottom, the AI market remains very tight, and most investors have been washed out.

Tom Lee said in an interview with CNBC: "I believe we have already hit the bottom. Many hedge fund managers tell me the famous adage: 'Catching a falling knife is dangerous, because you never know how much more it will drop.' But I think we have indeed hit the bottom, for two reasons. First, the AI market remains very tight—it is not a market with overcapacity. We see constraints such as political resistance that have prevented more capital expenditure, which has indeed slowed growth, but has not formed a peak. The second signal, in my view, is crypto thefts. The $6.3 billion loss from the Binance hack barely caused a drop in crypto prices. If crypto were a leading indicator of risk appetite, you would have seen investors being washed out to some extent, but this incident barely hurt crypto prices."
