According to Reuters, US Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren is expected to take over as Chair of the Senate Banking Committee when Democrats assume control of Congress next January. At that time, she will gain more staff, the power to issue subpoenas and demand testimony, and full control over the committee’s agenda. Large banks, consumer credit institutions, private equity firms, and crypto companies may face stricter scrutiny. Stifel’s chief Washington policy strategist Brian Gardner anticipates a wave of investigations to follow. A source familiar with Warren’s thinking said she may probe the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)’s August decision to approve the Trump-backed World Liberty Financial bank charter. Additionally, the Trump administration’s mass layoffs of financial regulatory staff and attempts to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) will also likely be targeted for investigation. Warren co-founded the CFPB. On policy matters, another source said Warren will push for issues with bipartisan support, especially lowering the cost of living. This year, she helped advance bipartisan housing affordability legislation and co-sponsored a bill with Republican lawmakers to restrict exports of advanced chips and other technologies. Warren wrote in Time magazine that she is willing to work with Republicans who listen to the will of the people, adding: “CEOs of big tech companies, Wall Street executives and large corporations should be prepared to answer tough questions.” The committee’s leadership appointments are still pending a decision by Democrats in the coming weeks. While theoretically two or three Democratic senators rank ahead of Warren, analysts expect they will opt for other committee positions. The White House responded that Trump is willing to work with anyone for the American people, but “false investigations and radical left policies” will undermine such efforts.
