Canada will announce countermeasures against Trump’s latest tariffs, further escalating the US-Canada trade war.

The Canadian government will unveil its countermeasures against the latest U.S. tariff measures on local time Tuesday. Canadian Finance Minister and other senior officials will hold a press conference in Ottawa. Earlier, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on a large number of Canadian goods starting Saturday, following the breakdown of bilateral trade negotiations. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously said Canada was prepared to take "tit-for-tat" countermeasures, but on Monday noted that given the U.S. economy is far larger than Canada's, the final plan may adopt more targeted measures rather than full reciprocal tariff hikes. Carney stated that the conditions the U.S. side put forward in the final stage of negotiations were "unfair and not in the economic interest". Meanwhile, rhetoric between the U.S. and Canada has continued to escalate. Ontario Premier Doug Ford publicly criticized Trump, who warned that Canada would face "even worse consequences" if it did not "comply". Trump further escalated his rhetoric on Tuesday, even threatening to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America". Markets are closely watching the specific scope of Canada's countermeasures, especially in core trade sectors such as automobiles, steel, aluminum and others. If the two sides continue to expand the coverage of tariffs, U.S.-Canada trade relations may further deteriorate, adding pressure to North American supply chains and inflation.

Wall Street restarts the 'U.S. dollar depreciation trade': Gold strengthens, emerging market currencies benefit, but cooperation from the Federal Reserve is still required.

Driven by the expansion of the U.S. fiscal deficit, the national debt surpassing $40 trillion, and the U.S. Treasury bond repurchase program, market concerns about U.S. dollar depreciation have intensified, leading to recent strength in gold and emerging market currencies. Gold has risen for five consecutive weeks, with its August gain on track to mark the largest monthly increase since 1999; the U.S. Dollar Index, meanwhile, fell to a three-month low last week. Last week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury raised the cap on its long-term U.S. bond repurchase scale from $2 billion to at least $40 billion, and may deploy around $1 trillion in Treasury General Account (TGA) funds to support the repurchases. However, the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds still rose to 5.34% at one point, indicating the market believes the repurchase program will struggle to reverse long-term pressures from fiscal deficits, inflation, and debt supply. The market has also begun re-pricing in Federal Reserve interest rate hikes; federal funds futures data shows the probability of a rate hike at the Fed’s October meeting has risen to around 56%, an increase of more than 7 percentage points from a week ago. Some institutions argue that without the Federal Reserve coordinating with fiscal policy, the current "dollar depreciation trade" will still struggle to form a clear, sustained trend. Against this backdrop, gold, resource-linked emerging market currencies, and commodities are likely to be beneficiary assets amid the U.S. dollar’s pressure. Deutsche Bank analysts even forecast gold could surpass the $4,800 per ounce target price.

Apple unveils new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models, boosting AI computing capabilities.

Beating AI Express, as more consumers start using Apple computers to create and run AI agents, Apple (AAPL.O) has unveiled new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models, equipped with upgraded chips and other AI-focused improvements. In its Tuesday announcement, Apple highlighted that its iPhone and Mac chips include dedicated components called Neural Engines for running AI models, plus a RAM architecture that eliminates partial memory bottlenecks. The new Mac Mini comes in two variants: M6 and M5 Pro, with starting prices of 6,999 yuan and 12,999 yuan respectively in China. Apple is positioning this device as a desktop PC ideal for "all-day agent computing", noting it can stay on a desk running AI agents long-term. The M6 is Apple’s first 2nm M-series chip, with both CPU and GPU boosted to 12 cores, and each GPU core now adds a neural network accelerator for the first time. Its AI performance reaches up to 4 times that of the M4 version. Memory starts at 16GB, maxing at 32GB, with bandwidth lifted to 170GB/s. Apple says LM Studio’s large language model prompt processing speed is up to 4.8 times faster than the M4. The pricier M5 Pro variant supports up to 64GB of unified memory and 307GB/s bandwidth, and Apple explicitly states it is suitable for long-term AI agent operation. Both models also get upgraded Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and a 2.5Gb Ethernet port, with an official launch on September 22. Pricing has climbed significantly: the M4 Mac Mini launched in 2024 at just 4,499 yuan, rose to 5,999 yuan this year, and the new model now starts at 6,999 yuan.

Chainalysis is partnering with Binance, Coinbase and other firms to launch "Operation Lighthouse" to track global child sexual exploitation networks.

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has partnered with crypto industry institutions including Binance and Coinbase, along with global law enforcement agencies, to launch Operation Lighthouse, a multi-day investigation targeting networks involved in child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The operation is based at the U.S. National Cyber Forensics & Training Alliance (NCFTA) in New York, and collaborates with Europol, the Australian Federal Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the UK’s National Crime Agency, and other bodies, tracking related funds and digital identities through blockchain intelligence. Chainalysis stated that the investigation covered over 29,000 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identity markers, more than 100 relevant forums and online hubs, generating over 14,000 investigative leads. Suspects involved are spread across 125 countries and regions, with some previously registered as sex offenders. Gavin Sather, Binance’s Senior Project Manager for Anti-Child Sexual Exploitation, noted that blockchain’s inherent transparency makes it harder for criminals to remain hidden long-term when committing related crimes using crypto assets. An Europol official called on financial services, payment systems, social media, and internet platforms to strengthen collaboration to combat online child sexual exploitation crimes.
