As the yen rises, Japanese retail traders are increasing short positions, and $235 billion in short bets could fuel further upside.

Bloomberg aggregated data from the Japan Financial Futures Association and Tokyo Financial Exchange shows that as of last week, Japanese individual investors held a net short yen position of approximately 3.61 trillion yen (about $23.5 billion), a further increase from August. This size hit 4.41 trillion yen in July, the highest level since 2015. Japanese retail investors have long followed a contrarian trading pattern: selling when the yen rises and buying when it falls. But as the yen continues to strengthen, these short positions are facing growing pressure to close out. Masayuki Nakajima, a strategist at Mizuho Bank, noted that if the yen appreciates further, some retail investors may be forced to close their long dollar positions—selling dollars to buy yen, which would amplify the yen’s rally. Bets on yen strength in the options market have also heated up. CME Group data shows the most actively traded USD/JPY option on Tuesday was a put option expiring in November with a strike price of 142.86. The volume of USD/JPY put options expiring by the end of the year is more than three times that of call options. The market is largely betting USD/JPY will fall to 150–152, with some 12-month options even pricing in a drop to 140. Meanwhile, Wall Street remains divided on the yen’s outlook. Some strategists argue the Bank of Japan (BOJ) has limited room for further rate hikes, and USD/JPY may face policy resistance after approaching 150. Other institutions counter that if the BOJ signals additional policy tightening, paired with Japanese exporters accelerating repatriation of overseas funds, the yen still has room to rise. Current market focus is shifting to the policy paths of the Federal Reserve and the BOJ. If the yen continues climbing, Japanese retail investors’ massive long-dollar and short-yen positions could shift from a force that “suppresses the yen” to a catalyst driving the currency higher as they close out their trades.

X Layer DeFi TVL hits an all-time high, surpassing $232 million.

Official sources report that the total value locked (TVL) of decentralized finance (DeFi) on X Layer has hit an all-time high of $232 million. Star, founder and CEO of OKX, stated in a post on X that TVL itself is not the end goal; more importantly, lending, stablecoins, real-world assets (RWA), yield markets, and on-chain capital markets are interconnecting and mutually reinforcing on X Layer. It is reported that X Layer is continuously enhancing its DeFi and RWA infrastructure to advance the development of more real-world assets, on-chain liquidity, and financial applications within its ecosystem.

JD Cloud Plans to Co-Build a 100,000-Card Domestic GPU Cluster with Moore Threads

At the 2026 JD Global Tech Explorer Conference today, JD Cloud announced plans to partner with Moore Threads to build a 100,000-card full-featured GPU cluster, creating a large-scale domestic intelligent computing infrastructure. The cluster will focus on large language model (LLM) training, inference, and embodied intelligence, and will open its computing resources to the entire industry. The two parties will conduct full-stack collaboration around chips, cloud platforms, and model training, supporting the iteration of JD’s JoyAI large model, accelerating model training, simulation, and high-quality data generation, with a key focus on serving supply chain AI, embodied intelligence, integrated LLM training and inference, and industrial applications. Previously, JD Cloud had built a domestic 10,000-card cluster with partners including Moore Threads; the latest plan for a 100,000-card cluster marks an expansion of their collaboration from model R&D and inference platforms to large-scale intelligent computing infrastructure. Moore Threads stated that the 100,000-card AI factory will cover scenarios such as LLM training, token generation, and agent training, and serve various industries. Moore Threads has made continuous progress in commercial operations recently: the company reported revenue of 1.736 billion yuan in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 147.42%, with cloud product revenue reaching 1.693 billion yuan, accounting for approximately 97.5% of total revenue. The company had previously completed the deployment of a 10,000-card intelligent computing cluster, and is advancing the construction of GPUs, interconnection networks, software stacks, and computing power scheduling platforms required for the 100,000-card cluster.

DeepMind Develops AI Map of the Human Genome, Enabling Direct Lookup of 9 Billion DNA Variations.

Beating AI News reports that Google DeepMind has launched the AlphaGenome Atlas, a searchable database precomputing all ~9 billion possible single-letter DNA variations in the human genome. The entire dataset is around 1 petabyte (PB), over 30 times larger than the AlphaFold Database. With the human genome containing roughly 3 billion DNA letters, each position can be replaced by 3 other bases, leading to the ~9 billion single-letter variations. Previously, researchers had to analyze variations individually using AlphaGenome; now they can directly retrieve results from the Atlas, avoiding repeated model runs. The Atlas also provides an AVI score for each variation, integrating predictions from AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense to help researchers prioritize variants most likely to have functional impacts. It covers both the ~2% protein-coding regions and the remaining 98% non-coding regions, which are harder to study. Multiple research teams have already used the tool to identify previously overlooked rare disease-related variations, with experiments confirming one such variant causes abnormal RNA splicing.

US journalist: Apple's foldable iPhone will be named iPhone Duo, with a starting price of $2,000.

US tech journalist Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple (AAPL.O) has finalized the name of its first foldable iPhone as iPhone Duo, with a starting price of $2,000 — a figure that accounts for additional memory costs. The device will offer a maximum storage capacity of 2TB, corresponding to a price tag of around $3,000. The iPhone Duo is slated for an official launch in October, supports the Apple Pencil, and comes in two color options: dark blue and white.

Ant Bailing has officially open sourced its first native multimodal model, Ling-3.0-flash-VL.

Ant Bailing has officially open-sourced its first native multimodal model, Ling-3.0-flash-VL. The model was previously launched via API; this release includes BF16 and FP8 weights under the MIT license, with FP4 and INT4 versions to follow later. Ling-3.0-flash-VL can process images, videos, documents, and software interfaces, then call tools to complete operations, and further check and modify based on execution results. For example, when building a webpage, it can write code based on reference images, then review the actual page performance and adjust it on its own. The model uses a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, with approximately 124 billion total parameters and around 5.5 billion activated parameters per inference run. Its context window can be extended up to 1 million tokens. Ling-3.0-flash-VL inherits the core advantage of Ling-3.0-flash as an efficient execution node in agent workflows, balancing output quality and operational efficiency in visual feedback loops, enabling it to complete full tasks at lower cost and in less time.
